I’m the parent/guardian of a teen using Talkspace. Can I talk to my teen’s provider and access information about their progress?

In general, you may not access your teen’s information without their informed consent. In the majority of U.S. states, health care providers may not share any information with anyone until the patient has given informed consent to that information being shared with that person.

Should your teen provide their informed consent, you can submit a third-party request for their medical records; this form will need to be signed by the patient. Additionally, we only disclose private information over phone calls due to HIPAA privacy concerns; therefore, your teen will need to give their therapy provider your name and phone number if you’d like to discuss their treatment progress.

If your teen feels comfortable sharing information with you directly (i.e., sharing their therapy room transcript, etc.), they may do so; this would eliminate the need for an official records request.

If you have any questions about this process or the legal requirements therein, reach out to support@talkspace.com.
