Is Talkspace safe, secure, and confidential?

At Talkspace, privacy and safety are our #1 priority. We deploy a variety of techniques to ensure that you and your personal information are always kept safe and confidential.

Talkspace provides services similar to those a client would receive when going in-person to a therapist’s office. Our technology is fully compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). We conduct annual assessments to ensure we are compliant with current HIPAA and related health care standards. All data on our servers, as well as all communication that happens between our software and the servers, is encrypted. Talkspace requires most members enter a two-factor authentication (2FA) code in addition to their password at login. Members using the Talkspace app have the additional option of adding a passcode, which is required each time the app is accessed. Our iOS app also uses Touch ID and Face ID on enabled devices.

To protect confidentiality according to HIPAA, we require all users to create a unique nickname during the registration process, which is only shared with their therapists. You can determine whether you want your provider to address you by your first name or nickname during consultation.

Talkspace will not share or disclose your personal information to anyone, including your organization and other 3rd parties if you sign up through them. However, we do require every user to submit emergency contact information, which is only utilized according to safety and reporting mandates.

We do not sell protected health information (PHI), which includes medical history, diagnoses, transcripts, and any other documentation held in medical records, to anyone.
