How to get a prescription
To receive a prescription through Talkspace, you’ll need to have an appointment with one of our psychiatric providers. They’ll assess your needs, review your history, and determine if medication is a good option for your care.
NOTE: Medication is not a guaranteed outcome of psychiatry sessions and is prescribed solely at the discretion of the provider based on their clinical judgment.
To get started:
- If you're already a Talkspace therapy member, you can either discuss with your therapist whether psychiatry is a good fit and receive a referral to a psychiatric provider at Talkspace, or you can add psychiatry directly to your account.
- If you're new to Talkspace, you can sign up for psychiatry right away, no referral needed.
Refill policy
Talkspace policy requires that you meet with your psychiatric provider at least every 3 months in order to receive a refill. Please note that providers may require more frequent visits depending on your needs.
Medication costs
The cost of your medication depends on a few different factors:
- Your insurance coverage. If you have health insurance, your medication may be covered, but the cost will depend on your plan’s copay, deductible, and the medication’s pricing category.
- The type of medication prescribed.
- The pharmacy you use.
For the most accurate cost information, we recommend checking with your insurance provider and chosen pharmacy before filling your prescription.
Types of medication we can prescribe
Talkspace psychiatric providers can prescribe a range of medications commonly used to treat mental health conditions, including antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, and other non-controlled substances.
For safety and legal reasons, controlled substances such as Adderall can't be prescribed through Talkspace. You can view an alphabetical list of controlled substances on the US Drug Enforcement Administration website.
Your provider will discuss appropriate medication options with you during your session and determine the best course of treatment based on clinical judgment. For a list of medications that can be prescribed through Talkspace, please refer to our Psychiatry services page.
Choosing a pharmacy and picking up medication
During the intake process, you’ll share your preferred pharmacy. You can choose:
- A local retail pharmacy
- A mail-order pharmacy (like Amazon Pharmacy)
If you have insurance, you may receive the best pricing by using an in-network pharmacy, where your insurance has negotiated rates. If you choose an out-of-network pharmacy, your costs could be higher.
Once your provider submits your prescription, you can either pick it up in person or have it delivered, depending on your pharmacy’s process. If you're picking up in person, be sure to bring your insurance card if you're using insurance.
Updating your pharmacy
At this time, you can’t view or edit your pharmacy details directly in your Talkspace account. To make changes, you can either:
- Ask your provider to update your pharmacy and send your prescription there.
- Or, request that your provider resend your treatment intake questionnaire so you can enter your updated pharmacy information.
