You can use your TRICARE benefits for Talkspace services like individual therapy, couples therapy (for any two people age 18 or older), and psychiatry if you are:

Physically located within the United States

- TRICARE Prime (HMO)
- TRICARE Prime Remote (HMO)
- TRICARE Select (PPO)
- TRICARE Reserve Select (PPO)
- TRICARE Retired Reserve (PPO)
- TRICARE Young Adult (Prime & Select)

- Active duty service members (with referral)
- National guard and reserve members
- Retirees and their families

How to Sign up
NOTE: Active duty service members are required to get a referral from their Primary Care Manager (PCM) or Military Treatment Facility (MTF) care team before starting with Talkspace.
If you sign up without a referral, we may ask you for one, and you might not be able to use our services until you provide it.
To coordinate your care and meet military requirements, your medical records may be shared with the referring entity.
To sign up for Talkspace as an active duty service member:

Request a referral
Contact your PCM or MTF by sending a message through the MHS GENESIS portal or by calling your clinic’s appointment line. When you reach out:
- Ask for a behavioral health referral.
- Specify that you want telehealth services.
- Request Talkspace as your preferred provider.

Wait for your referral to be reviewed (typically takes 3–5 business days)
After you request a referral, your PCM or MTF will review your needs. They may contact you to discuss care options, which could include on-base care or off-base (network) care. If off-base care is appropriate, your referral might be sent to a regional contractor (such as TriWest or Humana Military) for review and approval.

Check your referral details (for off-base care)
You can check your referral status and details by logging into your network contractor’s patient portal or calling them:
- Humana: call 1-800-444-5445 or visit TRICARE East Patient Portal
- TriWest: call 1-888-874-9378 or visit TRICARE West Patient Portal
When reviewing your referral, confirm:
- Talkspace is listed as your provider (If not, contact the contractor to request reassignment)
- Care type is telehealth (Talkspace only provides telehealth services, not in-person care)
- Number of sessions approved (if there is a limit)
- Expiration date (usually 6 months for behavioral health referrals)

Start with Talkspace
Once your referral is authorized by TRICARE and Talkspace is listed as your provider:
- Open talkspace.com/military and click Get Started.
- Complete all prompts, including entering your Department of Defense Benefits Number (DBN) and the state where you’ll receive care.
- After you create your account, Talkspace will match you with a TRICARE network provider so you can begin care.
- (Optional) Download our mobile app on iOS or Android.
If you are not an active duty service member, you do not need a referral to start using Talkspace with your TRICARE benefits.
To sign up for Talkspace as a non-active duty TRICARE beneficiary:
- Go to talkspace.com/military and click Get Started.
- Complete all prompts, including entering your TRICARE DoD Benefit Number (DBN), which is the 11-digit number on your ID card, and the state where you will receive care.
- After you create your account, Talkspace will match you with a TRICARE network provider so you can begin care.
