Teen Therapy at Talkspace: What Parents/Guardians and Teens Should Know

As a teenager, a lot of changes are happening at once—physically, hormonally, and developmentally. Prioritizing your mental health is just as important as grades, accomplishments, or college admissions. With Talkspace, if you're between 13 and 17 years old, you can connect with an online counselor or therapist to work through various challenges.

For parents and guardians, Talkspace is here to guide you through the process of supporting your teen's mental health.

A Teen's Guide to Therapy

What can I talk about with my Talkspace provider?
You can discuss anything you'd like with your Talkspace provider! This could include school, relationships with family or friends, anxiety, depression, or whatever's on your mind—good, bad, or in-between. Your provider is here to help you through tough moments and celebrate your wins.
How do I sign up for Teen Therapy? Is it confidential?
To sign up:
  1. Go to talkspace.com.
  2. Click Get Started.
  3. Select Teen Therapy when asked what kind of service you're looking for.

If you live in NYC, be sure to scroll down to the NYC TeenSpace Program section below—you may be eligible for free therapy!

IMPORTANT: Your account should be created using your personal info—like your name, email, and date of birth—even if you're using a parent or guardian’s insurance or benefits. You’ll be able to enter their benefits information during sign-up when asked.

Depending on where you live, you might need a parent or legal guardian's permission to speak with a therapist. To check your state's rules, visit Consent Exemptions for Minor Clients of Talkspace. Once you're signed up, your conversations with your provider are private. They'll always ask your permission before talking with your parent or guardian.

A Parent's Guide to Therapy

How can I support my teen's therapy?
Talkspace Teen Therapy is designed for teens ages 13 to 17. If you're looking for ways to support their mental health, we recommend our blog post for parents and guardians: How to Help a Teenager with Mental Health Issues. It offers helpful guidance on supporting your teen throughout their therapy journey.
Does my teen need my consent to speak to a therapist?
The laws of your state determine if your teen needs the consent of a parent or guardian to receive therapy. For more information on state-specific requirements and how to provide consent for your teen to receive services from Talkspace, check out Consent Exemptions for Minor Clients of Talkspace.

If you have any questions about consent, contact privacy@talkspace.com for guidance.

Can I help my teen sign up for therapy?
Yes! We welcome parents/guardians to kick off the sign up process so it's easier for their teen to get started. The process is simple-- answer questions about your teen's eligibility and provide consent for them to get therapy. After, you'll receive an invitation link to share with your teen so they can create an account.
  1. From talkspace.com/online-therapy/teens, click "I'm a guardian of a teen".
  2. Enter your teen's age and zip code.
  3. Provide your consent for them to get therapy.
  4. Share the invitation link with your teen.

Tip: Since you've provided eligibility and consent information, your teen should have everything they need to complete signing up! Feel free to stick around or sit with them in case they need support or have any questions.

I'm interested in speaking with my teen's provider or obtaining a copy of their medical record. Can I do that?
Parent and guardian support can play an important role in a teen's therapy journey, and we understand that you may want to connect with your teen's provider. To learn about the process, visit How to Provide Consent for a Third Party to Learn About My Diagnosis, Treatment Approach, and Speak with My Provider.

Depending on your state's requirements concerning access to your teen's medical records, you may have the right to request a copy of your teen's medical records. For details, see the "Obtaining Medical Records or Treatment Summary" section in the same article.

NOTE: At this time, our teen therapy sessions are not designed to support family therapy sessions.
